SD1100 post-purchase

My PowerShot SD1100 shipped today. I should be getting it in a week. It’s supposed to come via UPS 3-Day, but the holiday will apparently cause a delay.

I tell ya, I bought that camera in the nick of time. The free 4GB SDHC card and case offer was only valid while supplies lasted. They ran out of the card and case combos this morning. I made out pretty well – free SDHC card and case, free shipping, and no sales tax.

I think I should get a spare battery for the camera. There is the official Canon NB-4L battery and numerous third-party batteries. Of course, I was comparing prices and customer reviews. I came across something totally obscene. The Canon battery costs $37.66 at Amazon and $39.99 at NewEgg. The same battery costs $62.99 at Best Buy. Ugh! More like Worst Buy! The Canon battery costs the same at Circuit City. The deal is even worse considering you can get well-rated third-party batteries on Amazon for around $8.

Changing subjects, I was able to try out a DeLorme PN-40 today. I found one geocache and used it to navigate home. I put the unit through its paces. I’ll give a more detailed opinion about it later. I’ll just say that it is a fine and capable unit, but it is not as big of an improvement over my eXplorist as I thought it would be. As nice as having aerial photos on my GPSr would be, I am wondering if a used eXplorist 500 would be a better value for me.

Also, my PowerShot A70 should get to Canon’s repair depot in Elk Grove Village tomorrow.

Update 11/26/2008, 7:41PM:  I see that NewEgg has raised the price of the SD1100 to $159.99 plus shipping, but now includes the case and an 8GB SDHC card.  I don’t think the 8GB SDHC card is worth the approximately $18 more than what I paid.
